Each month, millions of people turn to Veritas Health websites to learn about medical conditions, symptoms, and treatment options. Our articles, videos, and blogs are richly-detailed and compelling thanks to a team of talented medical editors who work closely with health professionals to produce content that is accurate and unbiased.

We recently sat down with Spine-health editor, Asra Karim, to learn more about her role and to find out how she came to Veritas Health. It turns out, her personal quest to find reliable health information led to landing her dream job as a medical editor.

Thanks for joining us today. Before we get started, can you tell us a little about your background?

AK: My education is primarily in the sciences, and my work experience is pretty diverse. I’ve been employed in retail, classroom, hospital, and office settings. I particularly enjoyed teaching high-schoolers at Kaplan Test Prep for 3 years, which developed my skills in explaining difficult concepts. After completing my graduate program, I became a lab technician but quickly realized that benchwork didn’t interest me. I used my spare time to get an entry-level certification with the American Medical Writers Association and started looking for medical writing roles.

What brought you to Veritas Health?

AK: A month or so after receiving a cortisone injection in my wrist, the treated area developed fat atrophy and hypopigmentation. I panicked and started scouring the web for answers. While these rare side effects were listed on a couple of websites, only discussed why these symptoms occur, how rare the symptoms are, and how long the symptoms may last. Finally, I had a complete answer to all my questions, and it brought me peace of mind. I immediately networked with Veritas Health employees to learn more about the company.

Why did you apply for this role?

AK: I applied because I love to help people directly, so patient education was the most appealing branch of medical writing. Veritas Health websites are among the best in patient education, and the company happens to be based in Illinois. Being a part of Veritas Health’s editorial team is truly a dream job for me.

What in your experience prepared you for this role?

AK: As a master’s student at Rush University, I picked up the nuances of scientific research from my thesis work, class writing projects, and journal club presentations. Graduate-level research and writing demanded excellence and equipped me with all the necessary skills.

What are you working on right now?

AK: I am currently working on a series of articles about lower back pain for Lower back pain affects most people at some point in their lives, so the research on this topic is vast and constantly evolving.

What do you enjoy most about working for Veritas Health?

AK: Veritas Health has a wonderful work culture. The team is highly-skilled, dedicated, and friendly. Working for Veritas Health doesn’t get tedious, because everyone here loves what they do.

Before we go, do you have any tips for someone who may be interested in getting into this field?

AK: It may be challenging to get into medical writing and editing, because prior experience and advanced degrees are highly sought-after. It’s most important to build a portfolio or a set of writing samples. Most people are willing to lend a hand; don’t be afraid to contact researchers who could use a volunteer, and reach out to seasoned medical writers and editors for career advice.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story with us, Asra. This is great information for anyone who may be considering getting into the medical editing field.
